When your attention is focused on your body, you are more or less out of your thoughts and feeling what is going on inside your body. Your heart is beating, your breath is moving in and out of your lungs. You may be experiencing rumbling in your stomach or noticing how the bones you are sitting on feel against the surface of the chair. Maybe there’s an ache or two, as well.
Have you ever noticed that when you start to feel into your body, your thoughts begin to slow down?
Every day, your attention goes into different parts of your body as you move through your daily routines and most of the time without your even being conscious of this action.
Meditation is about shifting your focus out of your mind and engaging with what’s happening in your body. The process is about feeling any emotions that float to the surface, being with them, not pushing them away or making them or you wrong. It’s a time to get to know your inner landscape – you as a Divine Being.
So, the next time you feel your world spinning around you and you have no idea which way is up or down or what to do next, how will you choose to bring yourself back to your center? How will you choose to unwind?
Some simple, yet powerful, suggestions to get back to your center
Step outside in nature and allow yourself to be cleansed and restored. Close your eyes, move your focus to your heart and let all of your other senses take over.
Breathe:
And feel your lungs expand – unrestricted. Imagine newly oxygenated air moving into your nostrils, down the back of your throat and into your lungs. Imagine the air moving through your blood stream and enriching, feeding every cell of your entire body.
Listen:
To the wind rustling leaves on the trees, blowing them from their branches as they spiral down to the earth, to raindrops hitting your skin, your clothing, the ground beneath you. To the movement of water in the distance from a nearby stream, birds chirping to each other.
See:
Blue sky, no clouds or lots of fluffy white clouds or dark clouds full of moisture. Snowflakes falling onto your face. Notice your feet and the surface you are standing on fully supporting you.
Feel:
The expansion of no walls, no ceiling to confine you, the warm sun on your face, your neck, your back. The sweat on your brow or a cold breeze that freezes your nose, your lips, the tips of your fingers.
Now stand still and look down at your feet again. Feel your feet and the ground below them supporting your weight. Imagine the Earth’s energy coming through your shoes and into the soles of your feet as it rises upwards through your body.
Think about it. Did you have to ask the Earth’s permission to stand on it, to be energized by it, to be supported by it? Or, did it just happen. Did the Earth ask you if you were worthy of receiving its bountiful gifts?
Now why couldn’t it be that way for everything we need?
Do this process three times a week, then five times a week, then seven days a week…
Feeling guilty? Let it go!
These are some easy beginner steps in building a foundation for your meditation and visualization practice. Realize that meditation is simply the medium by which you connect inwardly to investigate your inner world.
Creating a space where you can sit in quiet contemplation is the first step in opening the door to another dimension. This is the way to restore your connection with your Spirit family – omnipotent beings that follow you throughout your life, keeping tabs on you and nudging you when you are heading in a direction that will lead you to difficulty.
After all, who wouldn’t want to be led by an Angel?
